Historical Society Presentation Speakers
Mr. Stewart Ramm : Tobacco Industry in Clinton County
Mr. Ramm was a farmers for many years and raised tobacco here in Clinton County. He can remember when the tobacco business was a vital part of the Clinton County agricultural scene. He has several artifacts from the tobacco ear and will show them during his presentation. He was instrumental in creating a video of tobacco era in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He enjoys telling his friends and neighbors about the story of tobacco in Clinton County.
Mr. Gregory A. Stone: Pennsylvania Railroad – Renovo Shops
Mr. Stone is a native of Pennsylvania whose family owned the Cross Forks Tackle Shop from 1980 to 1996. He is a Penn State graduate majoring in Biology. He became a nurse in 1983 at Southern University and achieved his Anesthesia degree in 1989. He then trained at Geisinger Medical Center for Anesthesia Specialists in 1989. Greg is an amateur historian researching the Renovo Yards since early 1990. His knowledge of the Renovo facility is excellent and he will soon be giving a presentation to the Pennsylvania Railroad & Technology and The White Deer Railroad Museum. Someday Greg hopes to construct an exact model of the Renovo Railroad Complex. He has thousands of photographs and postcards of the Renovo Shop.
Mr. John Eastlake: Civilian Conservation Corps Camps of North Central Pennsylvania
Mr. Eastlake was a Forester with the Bureau of Forestry for 31 years. During those years he saw the CCC work day in and day out, so when he retired, he has the time to really pursue the histories of the CCC camps in the North Woods. His collection of CCC photographs and materials is one of the best in the State of Pennsylvania. He has many local pictures of the camps and the men who worked in the camps. In the future it is hoped that he will author a book on the subject to preserve the memory of all those men who worked to preserve the environment and woods of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Bruce Teeple: The Underground Railroad in Central Pennsylvania /Prince Farrington
After serving as the Curator of the Penns Valley Historical Museum for nineteen years, Mr. Teeple continues to give local history presentations on a variety of topics before school, church, and social groups. Bruce is currently serving as Secretary of the American Association of State and Local History, a small museum committee. He writes a community column for the Centre Daily Times and is working on a book about Prince Farrington.
Mr. Ron Novosel: Pennsylvania Mountain Man and a Black Powder Demonstration
Mr. Novosel has a full mountain man costume, which he wears at his presentation. He has studied the story of how the mountain man spread from Pennsylvania to the West. He has many artifacts, which he will present to the public at his show. He has been researching his information for many years. He will give a black powder demonstration with his rifle and pistol. He will also show the audience how the mountain man used his knife and tomahawk. Mr. Novosel’s vast knowledge and expertise will make an interesting show for all. His show will take place outside of the Heisey Museum, just look for the mountain man costume.
Mr. Thomas Taber will Present Logging Railroad Era of Lumbering in Clinton County, 4:00 p.m.
Mr. Taber is the author of many books on the lumber businesses and railroading ear of Pennsylvania. The Lycoming County Museum has been dedicated in his honor and he has contributed much to its present displays and collections. He began his research in 1959 and it took him 15 years to author his book on the "Logging Railroad Era of Lumbering in Pennsylvania". He has been researching the lumbering industry of Pennsylvania for over 60 years. He is called by many history buffs a living history of logging in Pennsylvania. We are honored to have him as one of our presenters for our Clinton County Heritage Days.
Mrs. Carol Brown: Lock Haven – Life and Times
Mrs. Brown is a past President and life member of the Clinton County Historical Society. She has collaborated with other local historians, including Susan Hannegan in writing and researching Lock Haven’s development and history, culminating in the publication of Historic Lock Haven: An Architectural Survey. She was an organizer, Secretary of the Steering Committee and First Lady of the Clinton County Sesquicentennial Celebration. She taught English and Spanish at Lock Haven High School and is presently volunteering her time for the Millbrook playhouse, of which she is past President. She is the wife of Judge Carson Brown of Lock Haven. She has researched the history of Lock Haven for many years and enjoys writing about it.
Bill and Pat Tyson: "Clinton County Capers".....Local History
Mr. & Mrs. Tyson are lifelong members and promoters of Clinton County [library courthouse volunteers]. Mr. Tyson is the founder of the Clinton County Model Railroad Club and the originator of the Renovo Railroad Convention. He was also the past president of the Clinton County Historical Society and he appointed the Clinton County Historical Records committee for the Clinton County Court House. Mrs. Tyson is President of the Friendship Community Center and Mr. Tyson is Vice-President. Bill & Pat are also both board members of the Beech Creek/Marsh Creek Area Museum. The Clinton County Commissioners, in May 2004, named Mr. & Mrs. Tyson, Clinton County’s Outstanding Citizens of the Year. The Tyson’s also researched and wrote the script for the county formation debate for the County’s 150th birthday. For nine years they have been judges for the Clinton County Scholarship Pageant and take part in local history presentations for all 6th grade classes. Pat Tyson is also the Chairperson of the Sesquicentennial Headquarters.
Mr. Terrence D. O’Connor, Sr.: Folklore and Ledgends
Mr. O’Connor is the Vice-President of the Clinton County Historical Society. He has been researching the lumbering business on the Western Branch of the Susquehanna for over two years and has amassed a lot of information on it. He has gone back into the county newspapers as far back as 1842. Terry is also in charge of setting up the speakers of the Clinton County Heritage Days. He is a members of the Greater Renovo Heritage Park, Community Trade Association in Renovo and the Clinton County Economic Partnership. He is a retired teacher and is presently running for supervisor of Chapman Township. Terry has presented many historical presentation of the Renovo Elementary School, Clinton County Historical Society’s Children’s History Club, Greater Renovo Heritage Park, Lock Haven Rotary and Mill Hall Rotary.
Mr. Leonard Parucha: Bituman a Coal Town of Clinton County
Mr. Leonard Parucha is an accomplished author and lecturer of Pennsylvania history and folklore. He is a writer for the Lock Haven Express and lectures throughout North Central Pennsylvania. He has had stories published in numerous historical magazines and other publication. He has spent a lifetime collecting his folklore and stories.
Mr. Gary L. Fogelman: Paleo-Indians in Pennsylvania
Mr. Fogelman is a well known teacher, author, editor and collector of Indian artifacts. He has been amassing his collection over a 35 years period and you must see his collection to appreciate it. He has been giving lectures on the Paleo-Indians of Pennsylvania for many years. In addition to his presentation he will have a display booth at the Heritage Festival and will help you identify your Indian artifact and approximate a value for it. Mr. Fogelman’s presentation will be in front of the Heisey Museum as it includes demonstrations of hunting weapons.
Mr. Russell Nelson: History and Development of Piper Aircraft
Mr. Nelson has been involved in the recording and collection of memorabilia concerning the history and development of Piper Aircraft. He is the President of Piper museum in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. He has researched Piper for many years and has done much to make the Piper Museum an asset to our Community.
