GPS HISTORIC TOUR OF LOCK HAVEN
Welcome to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1833, Lock Haven is the county seat of Clinton County. This walking tour was designed to be taken with a Global Positioning System, and coordinates are provided. Coordinates are accurate to within fifteen feet. At no time should the tour send you into the street. So turn on your GPS, program the coordinates, and enjoy!
- Heisey Museum

The Heisey Museum was built in 1831, two years before Lock Haven was founded. It began as a farmhouse, and became a hotel. Jerry Church stayed in this building as he founded the city. Now, it is a museum run by the Clinton County Historical Society.
- German Lutheran Church

This building is the oldest remaining religious structure in town. The church was originally built as Great Island Presbyterian Church, and was purchased by the German Lutherans in 1863.

This park contains an old canal lock, preserved from when the canal shipped goods and passengers. It was the canal that gave Lock Haven it’s name: Jerry Church named his new city after the canal locks.
- Lindsey Place

This lot was the first sold during the public auction for land in Lock Haven. Frank Smith purchased the property for $150, and built a tavern here. It burned down in 1835.
- Jay Street Bridge [Veterans Memorial Bridge]

This bridge was once the longest in the state at over 800 feet. In January 1919, it burned down and was replaced with an iron bridge.
- Clinton County Courthouse

The first courthouse in the county was to the south of this building, where Robb Elementary School now stands. The current courthouse was built in 1869, and made of stone from Farrandsville.
- Mackey Building

Levi A. Mackey, who lived here, was the first mayor of Lock Haven, and the town of Mackeyville was named after him. He began the first bank in Lock Haven, and often gave interest-free loans to local business owners.
- Fallon Hotel

Built in 1854, this hotel was constructed at the command of Queen Maria Christina of Spain. She planned to use it to visit Clinton County, but she never did. However, Mark Twain, P.T. Barnum, and General George Mead have all stayed here.
- Molson House

This house, owned by Maria Molson, was a station on the Underground Railroad. Maria hid slaves in her home, and at one point had as many as seventeen in her living room.
- Jarrett House

Colonel Phaon Jarrett’s home was built in 1854, not long before Jarrett distinguished himself as a commander in the Civil War, leading many important battles in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
- St. Paul's Episcopal Church

This church was built in 1855. It burned down during the flood of 1936, and was rebuilt. Saint Paul’s was the church of many prominent citizens of Lock Haven, including several mayors, opera singer William Raymond, and the wealthy Peale family.
- Simon Building

Built in 1883, this building was the first to use steam heat. It was originally a grocery store, and owned by Amelia Simon, early businesswoman in Lock Haven.
- Moorhead-Irwin Building

One of Jerry Church’s friends was John Moorhead, who owned this building with his partner, Robert Irwin. They ran a grocery store here until 1846, when L.A.Mackey purchased the building at a Sheriff’s Sale.
